Annual Enrollment Begins Today

Annual enrollment for KentuckyOne benefits is Nov. 1-15 for employees at all facilities except ULH | JGBCC. Employees at ULH | JGBCC will participate in annual enrollment Nov. 25-Dec. 6. A number of changes begin Jan. 1, including new medical plan options and changes to the employee savings plan.  

To enroll, KentuckyOne employees (except ULH | JGBCC) should access the CHI enrollment website through HR/Payroll Connection. Beginning Nov. 25, ULH | JGBCC employees will use a special enrollment website, Resources.Hewitt.com/chi

KentuckyOne Anywhere Care Receives Rave Reviews 

More than 100 employees put KentuckyOne Anywhere Care to the test during October commenting it was “very helpful” and “I was very, very pleased.” This new urgent care service connects patients with a medical professional over the phone or by web camera 24/7, expanding access to care, especially after hours when their physician office is closed. Patients are seen virtually within 30 minutes for ailments ranging from URIs (upper respiratory infections) to pink eye. 

Susie Smither, an administrative assistant in educational services for Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, received treatment for an upper respiratory infection. “I felt educated, not just treated,” Susie said.  

The free service for employees ended Oct. 31; it launches to the public today, Nov. 1, when KentuckyOne Anywhere Care will cost $35 per visit.

Fall Back! Daylight Saving Time Ends this Weekend 

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday morning, Nov. 3, at 2 a.m. Set your clocks back an hour. Please note the Standard Time and Attendance database, time clocks and TTE systems will automatically update the time correctly at 2 a.m. Employees’ shifts that span the time change will automatically be increased by one hour, including scheduled on-call shifts. Employees’ timecards should not be adjusted for the one hour. 

Exception: If an exempt employees's shift spans the time change, the employee's time will automatically be increased by one hour — to ensure that Exempts are not overpaid, timekeepers should check the FTE report and adjust the timecard to match the FTE-Expected Hours.

That’s why we were eager to hear from you through the recent Performance Culture Assessment. Your feedback there and through team meetings will help us focus on the right elements for our culture. 

Culture building is an ongoing effort to shape the environment in which we work with patients and each other. Leaders have completed some initial training, which will extend to employees in the coming year and beyond. Leadership Commitments in Action: Alice Bridges on Leading by Example and Respecting Uniqueness 

As KentuckyOne Health Vice President of Healthy Communities Alice Bridges sees it, a good leader knows that actions can speak louder than words. “Nothing is more important than being and doing, rather than just saying,” according to Alice. “We can talk all day about what we want, and the culture we want to have, and the way we want our work environment to be. But if we don’t live it, it doesn’t go very far.” 

She said leaders must also realize that “there are lots of different work styles and personality styles. You can’t have just one kind of person. I think KentuckyOne’s culture-shaping process is really helping leaders have respect for the uniqueness of others.”

Jewish Hospital Trager Transplant Center Receives $800,000 from Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence 

The Trager Transplant Center at Jewish Hospital has received an $800,000 grant from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence to provide a new treatment option for patients with chronic pancreatitis.  

The Jewish Hospital Trager Transplant Center, a joint program with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, is working collaboratively with research partners at the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute (CII) to pioneer the use of islet auto-transplantation in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis, a debilitating and painful disease. The grant will fund 24 pancreas islet cell auto-transplants over the next two years, the first of such procedures in Kentucky.

Research!Louisville 2013 Wraps Up with Awards Ceremony 

The partners of Research!Louisville recently recognized the winners of a three-day research competition. The contest was part of Research!Louisville, an annual event to showcase health/life sciences research conducted by graduate students, medical/dental students, public health and nursing graduate students, NCI-R25 undergraduate students, James Graham Brown Cancer Center high school research interns, postgraduates, research staff and faculty members at the University of Louisville.  

KentuckyOne's Ken Marshall, president of University of Louisville Hospital, and Matthew Williams, director of major gifts for Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation, congratulated the award-winning researchers during a special ceremony. A panel of UofL faculty judges selected the award winners from more than 349 entries.

Flaget Cancer Center Nurses Achieve Oncology Nurse Certification 

Congratulations to registered nurses Maggie Smith, left, and Pat Russman, right, at Flaget Cancer Center for receiving their oncology nurse certification. Now, all of Flaget's oncology nurses who are eligible have achieved 100 percent completion of the certificate program. 

This certificate of added qualification indicates the nurses possess knowledge and expertise in the treatment of cancer patients.

Run in the LSC Half Marathon; Limited Free Registration Available  

Registration is now open for the Louisville Sports Commission Half Marathon Sunday, Nov. 10, at 8:30 a.m. The unique route includes running through Louisville’s historic Cave Hill Cemetery. Support the Patient Family Assistance Fund 

Through the Perfect Gift Campaign at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph Jessamine, employees can contribute to important programs that support patients, families and fellow employees. One such program is the Patient Family Assistance Fund (PFAF).

PFAF helps with lodging, medicine and other necessities needed by patients or their families. Recently, a young man located in northern Kentucky had no transportation to see his mother, a patient at Saint Joseph Hospital. Through PFAF, the nurses arranged for a transportation company to pick him up and bring him to the hospital. The man was able to spend one precious hour with his mother before she passed away – an hour he would have missed had it not been for PFAF.  

Early bird givers can win one of six $75 VISA gift cards or a set of tickets to a show at the Lexington Opera House. Early bird ends on Nov. 8; campaign wraps up on Nov. 22.

Flaget Memorial Hospital and KCP Host Breast Health Education Lunch 

Flaget Memorial Hospital, the hospital’s Flaget Cancer Center and the Kentucky Cancer Program (KCP) hosted a free breast health education luncheon Oct. 27 in Bardstown. The keynote speaker was Dr. Paula Johnson of KentuckyOne Primary Care. Dr. Johnson, who is board-certified in internal medicine, told about 50 women assembled for the lunch that 30 percent of all cancers diagnosed in women are breast cancers. 

“Every year 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States,” Dr. Johnson said. “Eighty percent of those women have no family history of breast cancer.”

Frazier's Casino Night is Tonight; Go ALL in and Join Us! 

Frazier's 2nd Annual Casino Night is tonight, Nov. 1, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Mellwood Art Center (1860 Mellwood Avenue) in Louisville. Tickets are $40 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Patient Housing and Transportation Fund.

KentuckyOne Health has partnered with a wonderful non-profit agency called New Roots which is helping to make fresh, affordable, healthy food accessible to people in Shively and other "food desserts" in Louisville. 

To support this groundbreaking work, please go to TedxManhattan.org/challenge and vote for New Roots to win the TedxManhattan Challenge. The agency with the most votes (out of a total of five nonprofits) will go to NYC on March 1 and give a talk about our work connecting families in Louisville to farms with affordable farm fresh food. This talk will then be posted on the main TedX talks page for the entire world to see. The deadline to vote is Nov. 15

Training is Available

CHI has added new tools to GPS@CHI, its web-based system for talent management. The new tools enhance the development of employees by helping them align their individual goals with CHI’s organizational goals, and making it easier to receive continuous feedback and coaching from their managers. This expansion of GPS@CHI will roll out during the next three years. 

Employees included in Wave 1 of the implementation are required to enter their goals in GPS@CHI by Nov. 22, if they have not already done so. Wave 1 includes CHI National Office employees and employees at St. Vincent-Little Rock, St. Francis-Breckenridge, Villa Nazareth-Fargo, Franciscan Villa-South Milwaukee, St. Gabriel's-Little Falls, St. Joseph's-Park Rapids, St. Joseph's-Dickinson and LakeWood-Baudette. 

Training in how to enter goals is now available in LEARN. To access the training:

New Enterprise-Wide Privacy Policies

New CHI privacy policies were approved and adopted in September by the Board of Stewardship Trustees. These policies provide local leaders with the flexibility to meet their markets' unique privacy needs while maintaining CHI national standards, uniformity and continuity.  

The policies also follow new privacy standards enacted March 25, 2013, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which implemented changes to HIPAA privacy, security, breach notification and enforcement regulations as required by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). 

Implementation of the privacy policies will be coordinated by CHI's division privacy officers in conjunction with entity privacy officers. For more information, contact your division privacy officer (see list below) or entity privacy officer.

CHI Board Chair Writes Book on Pope

Chris Lowney, chair of CHI’s Board of Stewardship Trustees, has written a book on the leadership style of Pope Francis, analyzing the Holy Father’s approach to leadership in the context of the pontiff’s background as a Jesuit. The book, Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads, includes many anecdotes from Jesuits who knew Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ, before he was elected the leader of the 1.2-billion-member Catholic Church in March 2013. 

Lowney, an author and philanthropist who served as a managing director of J.P Morgan & Co., said he drew on his own experiences as a Jesuit seminarian in writing the book, which was published by Loyola Press and went on sale Oct. 4. Lowney said the book draws on the Pope’s own “words and deeds” to provide a “behind the scenes” portrait of the Holy Father. Lowney will donate half of all royalties from the book to four Jesuit projects that serve the poor overseas. More information is available on Lowney’s website, ChrisLowney.com

The phone menu for CHI's ITS Service Desk changed as of Oct. 28. Call the ITS Service Desk 24/7, 866.236.0441, if you need immediate or routine IT help. The ITS Service Desk phone menu is designed so all calls are quickly routed to the most appropriate analyst. With the new menu: 

• Option 1 can be used by physicians to talk to an analyst
   who specializes in ALL physician issues, including clinical
   applications and passwords, or leave a message
   reporting a broken device
• Option 2 is for clinical and patient care applications,
   including Cerner, Epic, Allscripts, PACS, Meditech,
   NexGen and more
• Option 3 is for password resets
• Option 4 is for IT device and general non-patient care 
   requests
