Try a KentuckyOne Anywhere Care Virtual Urgent Care Visit For Free

Starting Nov. 1, patients will have a new quick and convenient way to access urgent care 24/7 – KentuckyOne Anywhere Care. Patients will visit providers virtually by toll-free phone call or video chat (via Skype). A provider will call the patient back within 30 minutes of contacting KentuckyOne Anywhere Care. 

The cost of a visit is $35 and is paid by the patient, costing significantly less in most cases than the patient would pay out of pocket for an office visit. You and your family members are invited to use KentuckyOne Anywhere Care first – for free – before it opens to the public. Starting Sept. 27 until Oct. 31, employees may call KentuckyOne Anywhere Care at 1.888.809.6889 24/7 at no cost for this limited time only.  

(Requesting care during the pre-launch period is by phone only. The patient can choose to have the provider call back via phone or Skype for the visit. Early access is open to employees and family members who reside in Kentucky. Due to regulations in neighboring states, virtual care is only available to residents of Kentucky.)

Flu Education Required for Employees; Vaccination Strongly Recommended 

To protect employees and all who walk through our doors, and to comply with the expectations of the CDC’s National Health Care Safety Network and The Joint Commission, KentuckyOne requires that all employees complete a flu education module. In addition, the influenza vaccine is strongly recommended for all employees, including for those who do not work in clinical areas. 

Mandatory Education:
ULEARN (ULH employees only) module due by Oct. 31
LEARN module due by Dec. 31 (available Oct. 1) 

Influenza Vaccine:
KentuckyOne employees must either receive the influenza vaccine (through employee health or outside facility) or submit a declination to their local employee health office (with reason for declination) by Dec. 31.

New Career Development Program ECHO to be Offered this Spring 

KentuckyOne Health is offering a new career development program in the spring of 2014 called ECHO – Expanding Your Career and Healthcare Opportunities. The program taps into the potential of mid-level employees and puts them on a nursing, clinical or management pathway. 

ECHO utilizes blended learning to provide a health care-specific curriculum with an emphasis on critical thinking and advanced communications. The objective is to help students hone their knowledge and develop the confidence needed to enroll in degree or certificate programs. Students develop a customized Career and Learning Plan to guide advancement after ECHO completion.  

ECHO classes will be located in Louisville for the pilot program; however, the invitation to participate is extended to KentuckyOne employees at all KentuckyOne facilities.

Purpose Tour Portrays Employees’ Passion for Health Care 

“It’s not just a job – it’s a mission,” said Darlene Matekovich, RN, left, to Debra Hille, right, as she explained her passion for her patients and her work as the nurse manager for the acute care unit in Saint Joseph Berea. 

Her comment captured on video represented a common theme of dedication and commitment that emerged during the interviews conducted as part of the KentuckyOne Purpose & Values tour. The tour visited her hospital last week as well as making video stops at Saint Joseph Jessamine, University of Louisville Hospital | James Graham Brown Cancer Center and Saint Joseph East. 

The Purpose Tour gives employee-volunteers the chance to talk with one another about what is meaningful to them about their work. Next on the schedule will be Sept. 23 at Saint Joseph Hospital and Sept. 30 at Saint Joseph Martin.

Legacy of Life 5K Walk/Run is Saturday 

The University of Louisville Hospital, along with Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA), will host the annual Legacy of Life 5K Walk on Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m., at Iroquois Park. The 5K run/walk offers donor families, recipients, health care providers and donation supporters an opportunity to unite in a collaborative effort to raise awareness for organ, tissue and eye donation. 

The walk will benefit the organ donation memorial at University of Louisville Hospital, which serves as a place where families who’ve lost loved ones can reflect on the life lost, but also on the lives saved by organ and tissue donation. Registration for the event is $25 in advance, or $30 day of walk.

Saint Joseph Berea Welcomes All to Spoonbread Festival this Weekend 

Saint Joseph Berea, as one of the main sponsors for the 17th annual Spoonbread Festival, welcomes the community to a weekend of family fun. The festival begins Friday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park in Berea with a variety of exhibitors’ booths, including the delicious spoonbread booth. Friday night features free concerts in the park, a carnival, and the hot air balloon glow. 

Saturday, Sept. 21, is an action-packed day filled with more exhibits, Fun Park activities, a 5K run, tethered hot air balloon rides, a motorcycle show, dog show and free concerts in the park. On Sunday, Sept. 22, you can enjoy more booths, a car show and family fun in the Fun Park.

Join a KentuckyOne Heart Walk Team While You Still Have the Chance 

The American Heart Association’s Kentuckiana Heart Walk is this Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Great Lawn at Louisville’s Waterfront Park. You still have time to join a KentuckyOne team. You can choose from a one-mile route and a three-mile route. To walkers: Don’t leave when you return from the walk, as we will have our KentuckyOne group photo taken along the waterfront. Listen for announcements as you return. 

Thus far KentuckyOne teams have raised $25,671 toward their $75,000 goal. Tonight, Sept. 19, is Bank Night at two locations of Republic Bank: 661 Hurstbourne Parkway and 601 West Market Street. From 4 to 6 p.m., teams turn in all of their donations. This is very important, as the money collected through Bank Night is what is used to determine the top teams, and will determine whether or not KentuckyOne gets to keep the Hospital Cup (for the fourth year in a row). 

Please plan to have all of your team’s donation envelopes collected and delivered to Lisa Mullins or Kim Bramlett, who can handle the funds for you on Bank Night.  

Also, to the golfers out there, don’t forget about The Heart Walk Golf Scramble, slated for Monday, Sept. 23.

CHI, Texas Heart Institute Sign Letter
of Intent for Partnership Agreement

CHI has announced the signing of a letter of intent to begin exclusive negotiations toward a new partnership with the Texas Heart Institute (THI), which has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with St. Luke’s Health System in Houston. An agreement is expected by Dec. 1.  

"The Texas Heart Institute and CHI share a vision to create and nurture the health of the patients and communities we serve," said Kevin Lofton, CHI's president and CEO. "A partnership with THI will play a vital role in our effort to achieve health care’s triple aim of improving the patient experience, improving the health of the populations we serve and reducing health care costs." 

As a result of this letter of intent, THI has dismissed its lawsuit against St. Luke’s, which sought to dissolve THI’s contract with St. Luke’s Medical Center. 

Colorado Floods: Emergency Disaster
Relief for Employees

The thoughts and prayers of the CHI family are with all those affected by the destructive flooding in the greater Denver area. Four counties are now federally designated disaster areas, which means that CHI employees who live in Adams, Boulder, Larimer or Weld County and have suffered damage from the floods can apply for assistance from CHI's Emergency Disaster Relief fund. CHI established this fund to help employees who experience a severe financial hardship as the result of a natural or other catastrophic disaster.

Sacred Stories: Submit by Oct. 4

CHI promotes a workplace spirituality in which we can come closer, through our work, to becoming aware of our God working with us and through us in our most ordinary, everyday activities. The CHI publication Sacred Stories provides a glimpse into the lived spirituality of CHI’s ministry culture and has become a hallmark of the organization. 

The submission deadline for the 15th edition is Oct.4, and all employees are invited to submit stories. Information on the submission process and using the required consent form is available on the Sacred Stories page of Inside CHI. For more information, contact your mission leader.

Inside CHI and the collaboration communities are being upgraded to a new software platform to ensure that they meet the needs of employees. When the changes are complete, the new Inside CHI will be a go-to resource for CHI news, information and work tools customized to individual employees' needs and interests. The revised inside CHI is anticipated to be live in spring 2014.

Collaboration communities are being upgraded now to better support the work of teams across the system. National groups will be approached by members of the Web Services team during the next six months to discuss the transition to the new collaboration communities. 

Cardiovascular Service Line on Track
to Save $5 Million on Coronary Stents

CHI MBOs that perform interventional cardiac procedures have successfully shifted market share to make 70% of drug-eluting stent purchases from Abbott. The shift to Abbott, combined with purchases of other key cardiovascular products, will yield projected annual savings of $5.8 million. A partnership between the National Cardiovascular Service Line (CVSL) Senior Leadership Team and Integrated Supply Chain helped to achieve the 70% goal in late June. The National CVSL is working on additional opportunities to deliver quality care at lower cost through evidence based practices, such as reducing blood product utilization for heart surgery.  

CHI, Enroll America Provide Toolkit
on “Presumptive Eligibility”

A key area of the Affordable Care Act involves Medicaid presumptive eligibility. Starting in January 2014, presumptive eligibility will allow hospitals to immediately enroll patients in Medicaid based on a presumption of eligibility, with no waiting period for eligibility determination by the state. This process is not dependent on Medicaid expansion, and provides for all hospitals to be paid for services rendered, even if a patient is later determined ineligible.
