The emergency department at Saint Joseph Mount Sterling has been named the Neil R. Maxey Emergency Department thanks to a generous gift to the Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation from the Neil R. & Mildred Maxey Estate.

The emergency department is located in the $60 million Saint Joseph Mount Sterling hospital that opened in June of 2011.

Neil and Mildred Maxey, who are both deceased, were beloved Mount Sterling residents and loyal supporters of Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. Mrs. Maxey wished to honor her late-husband with this generous bequest before she passed in 2012. They were married for more than 70 years.

“The generosity of the gift from the Maxey Estate is humbling and appreciated,” said Benny Nolen, president, Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. “The Maxey family embodied true community and philanthropic spirit and we are proud to add Neil Maxey’s name as a permanent recognition in our busy emergency department. Mr. Maxey served his family, church and community his entire life. We certainly hope this generous gift will inspire others to follow suit.”

The Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation board of directors, and other hospital and community leaders joined the Maxey family, including Neil and Mildred Maxey’s daughter, Marianne Maxey Griffith, on July 16, 2014 for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event at the hospital to celebrate the gift.

The Saint Joseph Mount Sterling Foundation is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to raise and administer funds to support the core values and strategic plan of Saint Joseph Mount Sterling. All gifts to the Foundation remain in the local community.
