New Secure Texting App Available

In an effort to enhance care provider communications, CHI has developed a secure texting application titled CHI Chat. The purpose of CHI Chat is for KentuckyOne physicians and care providers to be able to send secure text messages to other KentuckyOne providers regarding patient care. At this time, the scope of users includes providers and specific identified clinical areas.

The CHI Chat app encrypts text messages containing electronic protected health information (ePHI) to comply with HIPAA. In addition, the message content is not stored locally on the device to provide additional protection of the information.

KentuckyOne providers and other care providers are provisioned in a group in the CHI Chat app in order to gain access. An email from is being sent out to the first group of provisioned providers with download instructions. When a provider has access, they simply need to download the CHI Chat app from the app store on their mobile phone and login with their CHI account domain\login information. If you do not have access to the app, please contact your medical staff office team to be added.

Please note, CHI Chat is to be used for patient care and business discussions only. However, it is not permissible to submit orders or critical lab values via a CHI Chat text. Orders still need to be submitted directly through the electronic health record. CHI Chat is a convenient communication tool, but not a substitute for documentation in the electronic health record. Critical lab values should not be sent, rather, a message to call for results – “Critical lab value. Please call the lab at xxx-xxxx for results.”
