While human energy is subjective, it also is very powerful. Sometimes we feel we have plenty of energy to do what we need to do; other times, we feel short of energy both at work and after work. There are certain people around us that seem to increase our energy, while others seem to drain it. We all have been on teams or in environments where energy was absent, or very negative, and results were poor and/or extremely stressful. We have also experienced teams and environments with lots of positive, creative energy where results flowed easily.

Positive energy isn’t always high energy. While we need bursts of high energy, too much eventually wears us out. There is another type of positive energy that can be very productive. This energy is calmer, more reflective and we can be very resourceful and creative. We can focus our Energy by practicing the 5Ps for excellent hand-offs: Patient/Project-Plan-Purpose-Problems-Precautions – a demonstration of our core value of Excellence. Negative, non-productive energy can also be high or low. Worry and depression are examples of lower negative energy; anger and self-righteousness are examples of high negative energy.

At work and outside of work, we each need to be more aware of our Energy. A noted leadership and productivity expert contends that managing personal Energy is more important than managing time. To manage our Energy, we each need to find ways to better create positive energy in ourselves and share it with those we influence and care for.
