Yammer Social Network is ITS Security Threat
URGENT ACTION: Do not subscribe to the Yammer Catholichealth network; if you already subscribed, discontinue use immediately
Recently, many CHI employees have received email invitations to join the Catholichealth network on Yammer, claiming that it is a "private social network for inside your company." CHI has not engaged Yammer to provide any services; Yammer is not an approved application. Please discontinue any use of Yammer immediately.
CHI ITS Security’s concerns about Yammer are:
• The risk that protected health information or other
confidential/sensitive information could be shared with or
accessed by unauthorized parties and not stored in a
• The information is not secure behind CHI firewalls.
• Today, Yammer is free but future ongoing costs and
licensing issues for Yammer are unknown.
Because of these potential security risks, anyone associated with CHI is directed to:
• Discontinue any use of the Yammer Catholichealth
• Delete all email invitations to use the service and do not
forward invitations to others.
• Stop adding content to the site and remove content
If CHI were to provide a service such as Yammer, announcements and information would come directly from your manager, CHI or your local organization. CHI is exploring an approved application that would create an internal network similar to Yammer.

Search Underway: Market CEO,
Nebraska and Southwest Iowa Network
In collaboration with the board of directors of CHI's Nebraska and Southwest Iowa Network, CHI began a national search for a new SVP/market CEO for the Network on Aug. 26.
The need for a new leader is a result of the impending retirements later this fiscal year of Rick Hachten, SVP of divisional operations for CHI and president CEO of Alegent Creighton Health; and Bob Lanik, SVP of divisional operations for CHI and president and CEO of CHI Nebraska. Both will take part in the CEO selection process, along with Michael Rowan and the search committee.
While the search process may take up to six months, the intention is to fill the position by the end of the calendar year and to have the new leader in place by early 2014.
Lofton No. 30 on List of “100 Most Influential"
For the ninth consecutive year, Kevin Lofton is on Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People in HealthCare.” He is number 30 on this year's list, and was number 48 last year. A former board chair of the American Hospital Association and now a member of the board of directors of the Catholic Health Association, Lofton has served as CHI’s president and CEO since August 2003.
GPS@CHI Adds Tools for Employees
CHI is adding new tools to GPS@CHI, its web-based system for talent management, which will enhance the development of CHI employees. GPS stands for Goals, Performance, Succession, and the system helps employees and their managers set goals, manage performance and plan employees’ development. The expansion will add new tools for goal setting and performance management. With these tools, employees and their managers will be able to:
• Align each individual employee’s goals with CHI’s
• Make performance management an ongoing process:
Track employee progress and record performance notes
Provide continuous, consistent feedback and coaching to
This expansion of GPS@CHI will roll out during the next three years. The implementation schedule and a demonstration of the new system will be available on Inside CHI.
Training will be available to all employees. Local HR staff will provide more information.
National Hospitalist Service Line
Launches Severe Sepsis Protocol
CHI's National Hospitalist Service Line (NHSL) is implementing an enterprise-wide standard clinical protocol for severe sepsis, to be used in all acute care settings. Developed by national and market-based clinical leaders, the protocol will deliver:
• Consistent care for patients with severe sepsis
• Better outcomes
• Lower costs
There is wide variation in sepsis protocols currently used in CHI facilities, which contributes to higher-than-expected patient mortality and morbidity rates, as well as increased cost. Studies show significant improvement in sepsis mortality when evidence-based treatment protocols are used: the national Surviving Sepsis Campaign estimates that 400,000 lives can be saved if just half the sepsis patients in the U.S. are treated with evidence-based protocols.
CHI’s protocol aligns with the guidelines of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and emphasizes early resuscitation. Physician champions have been identified for each market and will work with clinical leaders to implement the protocol by December. A patient screening tool, a copy of the protocol and communication resources are posted on the Severe Sepsis Prevention page of Inside CHI.
Web Resources Assist in Outreach
and Enrollment Efforts
The new CHI Outreach & Enrollment page on Inside CHI has information to help employees educate patients, families and communities about health insurance marketplaces and the enrollment process under the Affordable Care Act. The marketplaces open for enrollment Oct. 1, with coverage beginning in January. Prospective enrollees with questions and concerns are likely to turn to health professionals for help in understanding what the changes mean and how to enroll for coverage. Resources on CHI Outreach & Enrollment page will help CHI organizations and employees reach out to people who are uninsured and make them aware of affordable coverage options. Access and coverage for all has been a top priority for CHI for more than a decade. Health care reform helps move CHI closer to that goal.
Take Note: Monthly Email Maintenance
To help bring stability to CHI’s Outlook email, beginning Sept. 19 ITS will perform regular maintenance on CHI's Exchange servers the third Thursday of every month, 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. MT. During this maintenance window, depending on the maintenance required, email may be available intermittently; email may be unavailable; or, there may be no disruption in email.
Users who have difficulty accessing their email during a maintenance window should try using Outlook Web App (OWA) (Webmail.Catholichealth.net). If you are not able to use OWA, check the IT Outage Notification page on Inside CHI. If your issue is not already listed there, contact the ITS Service Desk, 866.236.0441.
A monthly email maintenance window is in keeping with industry standards for large organizations such as CHI. Additional maintenance activities may be performed outside this window as needed.
Important Information for CIBSA Users
Action: CBISA users - ensure your computer has Internet Explorer version 8 or above
On Sept. 14, Lyon Software is releasing a new version of the CBISA web application used to collect, track and report community benefit data. This new version can only be accessed using Internet Explorer (IE) 8 or above.
To check your computer’s IE version, follow these instructions. If you do not have IE 8 or above, contact the ITS Service Desk, 866.236.0441 or email@example.com, by Sept. 2 and ask for an upgrade to IE 8. You will need to provide your computer name (located on the upper right corner of your home screen; if you cannot find it, an ITS Service Desk analyst can help you). If you have already made a request for an upgrade to IE 8, you do not need to contact the ITS Service Desk again.
