Together we keep our patients and workplace safe
Each year, the National Patient Safety Foundation designates a week to highlight and celebrate patient safety. This year’s week is March 11-17, and the theme is “United for Patient Safety,” which fits perfectly with the KentuckyOne Health SafetyFirst program.
Everyone in health care plays a role in delivering safe care. By rallying around that common goal, we can make a great difference in patient safety. We recognize each person’s role and accountability for patient and workplace safety. From informed patients and their family members, to the “front line” nurses and physicians, to administration, to housekeeping, to pharmacy, to dietary, to IT — we can all be united in the goal of keeping patients and those who care for them free from harm.
Let’s renew our focus on patient and workplace safety this week. Here are a few things each of us can do:
- Stop & Resolve – Validate and verify doors are secure, medication dispensing systems are locked, and if threatened, request security’s presence.
- STAR – Stop, Think, Act and Review – if working alone or in remote locations, and ensure personal belonging are secure.
- ARCC – Don’t hesitate to elevate a concern. Good communication is key.
- Maintain a secure environment – Know your workplace violence response plan.
United for Patient Safety is a win for all! To learn more about National Patient Safety Week, contact your Quality/Risk/Safety department and go to UnitedforPatientSafety.org. And watch for local activities at your facilities this week to celebrate!
